Hotel shade is free if your hotel has it and you are up early enough. Beach huts charge by the hour. A reserved umbrella with two chairs on Eagle Beach or Palm Beach is $100 a day plus 20% tax and fees, $120.00 all in, with nothing extra for setup, and it is waiting for you at 10 AM.
Shade is the thing people forget to budget for in Aruba, and then spend a surprising amount on once they are here. Here is what the options cost and what you get for the money.
Hotel palapas and loungers
If you are staying on the beach, your hotel's palapas and loungers are usually included. The price is paid in a different currency: time. The shaded spots are claimed early, towel-saving is common, and on busy weeks guests queue at the beach hut before breakfast. Some resorts rent reservable palapas or cabanas to guests for a daily fee; ask at the front desk, because policies change by season.
If you are not a guest, hotel shade is not available to you at any price, and on Palm Beach the attendants do check.
Watersports huts and beach bars
Along Palm Beach, the huts that sell jet-ski rides and snorkel trips also rent chairs and sometimes umbrellas, by the hour or for the day. Prices vary by operator and season, so ask on the spot. Beach bars will seat you on their loungers if you order, often with a minimum on busy days. On Eagle Beach there is very little of this, because the beach is low-rise and residential.
Bringing your own
A shop umbrella costs little, and then the Aruba wind costs you the umbrella. Trade winds blow across both beaches all day, and an umbrella pushed into dry sand by hand lifts within the hour. We wrote up what the wind does to umbrellas and whether it is worth bringing one. The honest total is the umbrella, the sand anchor, the luggage space, and the hour of your day spent chasing it.
A reserved set
Our price is one number. A set is one wind-anchored umbrella and two beach chairs, set up before you arrive on Eagle Beach or Palm Beach and reserved in your name from 10 AM to 4 PM.
$100 per set per day, plus 20% tax and fees, $120.00 all in. No setup fee, no delivery fee, no deposit. Multi-day bookings are $120.00 per set per day. Up to eight sets in one booking.
What is included, and what is not
Included: the umbrella, two chairs, the setup, the anchoring and a crew checking the sets during the day, and a spot that stays yours if you leave for lunch. Not included: towels, coolers and drinks, which you bring, and anything from the beach bars. The 16% is Aruba's sales tax and it is in the $120.00, so the number on the calendar is the number on your card.
When you pay
Beach days 24 hours or more ahead are paid online when you book and confirmed on the spot. Days sooner than that go through as a request first with no payment, so we can check the beach against walk-in rentals; a secure payment link follows by email once your set is confirmed free. The meeting point on the beach is emailed to you after booking.
Is it worth $120?
For two people on a day you were going to spend on the beach anyway, it is the difference between arriving at 10 AM to your spot and arriving at 5 AM to fight for one. On Palm Beach as a non-guest it is close to the only way to have shade for a full day. On Eagle Beach it buys you the day back. Whether that is worth it depends on how you like to spend a holiday morning.
